In ancient India, where Yoga was born, the ASANAS (physical poses) were practised as a method of preparation for meditation; sages wanted to be able to sit comfortably in meditation for many hours on end (with the intention of reaching enlightenment) and they knew this would not be possible without the support of the physical body. Yoga Asana was practiced alone, under the instruction and supervision of a Guru. Thousands of years later, yoga began to take on a prescriptive approach; Ayurveda helped to identify imbalances in the individual and a sequence of yoga asanas (as well as dietary and lifestyle advice in line with yogic philosophy) would be prescrbed specifically for that person and their particular needs.
While I love the dynamic of group classes, I offer private yoga instruction as an opportunity to create a deeper connection with your yoga practice: it's developed and modified based on YOUR NEEDS ALONE, rather than aiming to appeal to the general public. It is a directed, holistic approach that will teach you about the asanas - how, why, and when to practice them - as well as about your own relationship with the practice. My clients are always shocked with the progress after the first month or two of beginning private lessons with me.
