"We're all just walking each other home." ~ Ram Dass
SARAH JANE DICKEN, Certified Yoga Teacher
I took my first yoga class 10 years ago on a beach in Goa (India) during a very difficult time in my life. After that practice, I had a profound meditative experience while walking along the shore for a couple of hours, and I knew then that I had found something incomparably powerful, that would forever change my life.
Upon returning home from India, I searched for a practice that would suit me best, and I found my way into a Bikram Yoga studio. I loved the intensity of the practice, and I continued exclusively with this style of yoga for several years. In the fall of 2011, I travelled to California to complete the nine-week intensive Bikram Yoga Teacher Training program. I fell in love with teaching yoga after my first couple of classes and I was eager to grow and develop as both a teacher and a student, so I travelled between Canada, the US and Australia over the next few years, teaching at a number of studios to a vast range of yogis.
However, I began to realize that I was limiting myself as both a yogi and a teacher by not exploring the depths of the practice and instead maintaining such a narrow focus and unwavering loyalty to just one lineage and method. Four years after becoming a yoga instructor, after many changes both personally and professionally, and having taught the same sequence of asanas the entire time, I decided to take a new direction; early in 2016, I founded SARASPONDA YOGA: private yoga in Southern Alberta, with a focus on personalized, prescriptive programs, tailored to the individual. After many hours of research and development - continuing ed modules, independent study, online training and certificate courses - I developed a diverse library of asana sequences and yoga programs, based on the unique needs of my clients.
My yoga practice has been transformative and life-saving, and my mission as a teacher is to empower others to develop a practice of their own that enables them to more fully explore the depths of their experience, on and off the mat. In my day-to-day life, I do my best to follow Patanjali's eight-fold path, and my personal approach to yoga instruction tends to focus on mindful movement, deepening awareness, anatomical and energetic alignment, breath integration, and deep relaxation - a healthy combination of asana (the physical practice), pranayama (the breath practice) and dhyana (the meditative practice).
CAM LOWEN & MR. BOWIE PUP
CAM ~ the 'HA' to my 'THA' Cam is my partner - in life, and in business - and started practicing yoga with me in the winter of 2014. At the time, he was long-distance running several times a week and looked at yoga as a beneficial addition to that fitness regimen. He was also interested in exploring yogic meditation practices and philosophy, and he connected with the practice more deeply than expected, pretty early on. In October 2016, he took on yoga asana as an exclusive practice (for physical and mental health), and travelled to India last spring to explore the roots of this practice and participate in the International Yoga Festival. His favourite sequence is the Bikram/Ghosh 26&2, but he is also a fan of the Ashtanga Primary Series and practices a variety of yoga sequences and styles.
Cam is mostly active behind-the-scenes of Sarasponda Yoga (for now!), but you can always catch him hanging out with Mr. Bowie pup during my private yoga sessions, encouraging him to be on his best behaviour. Sarasponda Yoga would not be possible without Cam's loving support and guidance, and we are so grateful that he's a part of this team.
BOWIE (aka Mister B., Bo, Dobbs) ~ CFO / COO Bowie joined Sarasponda Yoga in the spring of 2017. Cam and I adopted him while we were in India, and he made the long journey home with us - across the world! Bo recently completed his first lap around the sun, and he is shaping up to be such a sweet little gent. He might bark a little at first when you visit the studio, but that's just because he really wants to say hi. (You'll also see him swinging by to say hello at some point during pretty much every yoga video in the Online Studio!) Bowie likes to sit like a human, box like a cat, and snuggle like his life depends on it. He's a real business man, which makes him CFO and COO of Sarasponda Yoga.
TUNA BUN & SADIE (AKA Missus and Tiny) TUNA ~ CEO / Senior Nidra Teacher / Opinion Leader Tuna has been a very important part of my life for 12 years, and has always been one of my very best teachers. She loves a cozy yin practice and leads the best yoga nidra, and she happily unleashes her potently healing purr whenever her humans need it. Tuna Bun owns our hearts and runs the house, so it's only natural that she's CEO of Sarasponda Yoga.
SADIE ~ Art Director Sadie likes to sit in quiet meditation atop her purple perch, silently judging all of us. (Just kidding!) She's a little shy but very sweet once you get to know her, and she has an impeccable sense of style, which lends to her creative role as Art Director at Sarasponda Yoga.
